In many ways, this race has the most wide-open field. No one has run a stratospheric time (although Chris Clark of California (Pa.) has a sterling best time), and most of the top contenders are doubling in the 5,000. But, hey, if I'm winning the 10k with eight laps to go, who cares about my second event.
I think Medigovich will take it because he's got the best finishing speed of the bunch. I think.
So, without further ado, the top three:
- Brian Medigovich (Adams State)
- Chris Clark (California, Pa.)
- Daniel Kirwa (Harding)
All-Americans: Marko Cheseto (Alaska-Anchorage); Luke Cragg (Adams State); Amos Sang (Abilene Christian); Jeff Weiss (Slippery Rock); Ben Zywicki (Colorado Mines).
Amos Sang as a frosh last year showed a lot of grit at nats last year when he scored in both 10k & 5k. I would predict him to place in top 3 @ 10k. I think Kirwa is the X factor. If healthy, he's the favorite.
ReplyDeleteHow can you forget about Cheseto? He ran 29:08 with a 60 second last lap, he could very well push Brian to the line, if not take the whole thing? I was a little taken back by the fact that you didn't even include him in the All American let alone in the top three. I am no way connected to Alaska in anyway.
ReplyDeletethat is a damn good point...
ReplyDeleteRace conditions for 10K were cool & breazy. Dreaded Texas heat was not a factor in the race. Last lap with Kirwa & Medigovich was a thriller. Kirwa had an extra gear & blew past with 100m remaining. ACU's Sang & Tanui ran a smart tactical race, but didn't have the speed to match 1st & 2nd.
ReplyDeleteIt was cool? The National Weather Service had it pegged at 80. I guess that seems hot to someone who lives in Montana. It was 43 here this morning, which was warm enough to go running in shorts and shirtsleeves. I'd be toast in Tejas!
