Red hair, transfers lead Chico State

While nutzo supporters isn't unique to Chico State (Augustana, anyone?), a couple good storylines emerged for the team that won the West Region: two at-the-front transfers and a hard-working fifth man red crimson-colored hair.
Alan Campos "had to work as hard or harder than anyone on the Chico State roster" to earn a spot on the post-season roster, according to a school press release. He sported a red tricolor during his race at Golden Gate Park.
I have written how Chico was aided by Humboldt State transfer Jimmy Elam, who was fifth in the West Region. Cal State-Fullerton transfer Brent Handa was fourth, and apparently wasn't even intending to run this fall. Chico State alums are glad he did.
Coach Gary Towne said his team is the "best-supported team on the West Coast, regardless of division." It's a 32-hour drive from California, but hopefully they'll be lining the course in Evansville, too.

Note: While I'm trying to find interesting stories in advance to next week's national meet, I'll pick my choice for top three individuals (in Olympic fashion) and top eight teams (as these determine next year's qualifying spots.Of course, I want to hear your thoughts, too.

  1. Chico will have over 25 people making the drive out to Indiana!
