NCAA Division II hasn't found its version of distance runner-friendly Eugene, Ore., at least when it comes to the outdoor championships.
Last year it was San Angelo, Tex., this year it's Charlotte. In 2011, it'll be Turlock, Calif., home of Cal State-Stanislaus. Bring plenty of water and nice, big umbrella. And maybe a chair.
Where could they have it to be nicer to enduro-folx? How about Bellingham (Western Washington), Monmouth (Western Oregon) or Duluth (Minnesota-Duluth), where -- as a former resident -- I can vouch that it's "cooler by the lake."
I suspect facilities might be part of the decision. (I assume they'll add stands there in Turlock.) And keeping those sprinters nice and toasty.
Stanislaus just completed construction of a brand new track facility. It's supposed to be a fast layout (Short straights and long turns) and a good surface. As far as heat goes, i'd expect that the distances will be held in the evening and it won't be any worse than Abilene or San Angelo or Emporia, KS, all hosts the past 5 years. No humidity and usually pretty nice in the evenings in N. Cal. Also, a much less chance for extreme weather in Turlock, CA.
