D2 riot

So what happens when you get a bunch of college runners, jumpers, throwers, wrestlers, swimmers and divers all together? Well, sometimes they riot.

Rumors I'd read of a riot at the D2 Winter Festival turned out to be true, after the NCAA handed out penalties to five schools recently. Although message boards alleged all sorts of activities (as they invariably do), only those affiliated with wrestling programs were penalized (although three schools were "privately" scolded).

At the time, I searched Houston-area news outlets for any stories on the ruckus, but to no avail. startribune.com had this about Minnesota-State Moorhead...

Mt. SAC

For those living in the Midwest or West, the Mt. SAC Relays are a highlight of the collegiate track season. (That Stanford invite is pretty sweet, too, I've heard.) I've seen guys break through the 29-minute barrier in the 10,000, and I've seen a season's worth of work go by the wayside. It's kind of a crapshoot, but if you get in a fast heat, you'll roll.
For D2, it looks like Adams State is absolutely loading up the 5,000 meters (five under 14 minutes?!?!); Abilene Christian has four quality 5k runners; Western State has quite a small (but quality) squad; Mankato St. has a big squad; Harding brought a pair of fast 10k guys; and do my eyes deceive me, but is that THE Willie Gault entered in the 100m? My legacy

I'd be willing to bet my legacy will be erased from the Adams State record book this spring. Reuben Chebon-Mwei debuted with an 8:55 (altitude adjusted) steeplechase on a windy Pueblo, Colo., day. Fifteen more seconds and the (my) school record will be his. It's about time: Mine has stood for nearly 17 years, escaping a few close calls -- most notably from Carl Blackhurst. I had hoped Carl would get it; good luck to you, Reuben!
